Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve got the answers.
Q: What is batt insulation made of?
A: Batt insulation is most commonly made from fibreglass or mineral wool (also called rock wool or stone wool). Fibreglass batts are lightweight, widely available, and cost-effective. Mineral wool batts offer better fire resistance and sound dampening, and hold their shape better over time. Both are available in standard widths sized to fit between typical wall studs and floor joists.
A: Batts are used in exterior walls, interior partition walls for sound control, attic floors between joists, and floors above unheated spaces like garages or crawl spaces. They are particularly well-suited for new construction and renovation projects where stud cavities are open and accessible. In finished spaces, blown-in or spray foam options are generally more practical.
A: Batt insulation performs well when properly installed, but cold climates like Ontario demand attention to installation quality. Gaps, compression, or voids significantly reduce the effective R-value. Mineral wool batts tend to perform more consistently in cold climates because they are more rigid and less prone to the compression issues that can affect fibreglass. Pairing batt insulation with thorough air sealing is essential for maximizing performance in Ontario winters.
A: Batt insulation in accessible areas is among the more DIY-friendly insulation options, but it requires care to install correctly. Leaving gaps around electrical boxes, compressing the material to fit tighter spaces, or failing to account for vapour barriers can all undermine performance. For exterior walls, attic floors with complex layouts, or any area where vapour control matters, professional installation is recommended to get the full benefit.
A: Batts are better suited to new construction and open cavities where they can be cut and fitted precisely. Blown-in insulation has the advantage in existing attics or irregular spaces because it fills around obstructions and covers the full area without cutting. For attic floors with lots of joists, pipes, or wiring running through, blown-in typically delivers more even coverage. For open wall cavities during a renovation, batts are often faster and less expensive.
A: In Ontario’s cold climate, a vapour barrier on the warm side of the insulation is required for exterior walls and is strongly recommended in attic applications where warm interior air could reach the cold side of the assembly. The Ontario Building Code specifies where vapour retarders are required, and a professional installer will factor this into the installation to prevent condensation from forming inside the wall or ceiling assembly.
